Honesty is the Worst policy :)

"Honesty is the Best policy". Isn't it? But certain bitter experiences of being honest and true to our consience makes me feel honesty is the worst policy and better not to follow that, though i can't. Be it a formal or an informal relationship with a known or an unknown person... i have felt in all the cases.

I would like to share a small experience that i came across.. One fine morning when i was on my way to office, i took my usual route to catch the bus. I need to pass by the nearby Devaki Hospital which is well known for the name as well as the cost they charge (as far as i have heard) . When I was hurrying up, an old woman with a child in her hand stopped me. She said that the child was suffering from some problem in the nostrils and it has to undergo some treatment. Also she said she came to Devaki hospital and the doctors have asked her to take the child to Royapettah Government hospital. And she added that she does not have the bus fair to commute. So i gave her ten rupees for the bus fair and left the place. But, for a moment I thought how this poor lady was able to consult the doctors in this posh hospital. However, I didn't try to analyze more on that.

Two days later, I saw the same lady with a child in front of the same hospital. The worst part is that she started narrating the same story again to me. I really got tensed. In a angry tone I said "Enma rendu naal munnadi dhaane idhe maadhiri kettenga?" (You asked me the same two days before also). She answered "Dharmam dhaana ma" . Right...I do dharmam but she is doing Adharmam..!!

Funniest part is when my friend said yesterday that she met the same lady in the same place :)

Chennai gave a good experience of studying the people!!

I have few other experiences too....!! So i may update this post later.

Hmm happens... Chennai, innum neraya solli kodukkum :)

This makes me remember a different incident,I saw one day at the Guindy station.

An old beggar was asking for some money citing his hungerness as the reason (ayya pasikkudhuyaa...type) and a gentleman hearing to it took some change from his pockets, and instead of giving it to him went straight to the VLR stall, got a cup of tea and gave it to him. Now he comments to the person standing next to him.. "kaila kaasu kuduthaa, nightu thanni adipaanunga.. adukku iduvey better" :)

Hmm... This is a typical case in Chennai. You can always never fail to find hypocrites like this.

In Tamil, we have a proverb called pasuth thol porthiya puli. This actually means, a tiger entering into the herd of cows to devour each one of them. The entry was gained by having a cover of dead cow's skin on it.

You have seen one instance of it. There are much more. I would actually advise you and the reader not to begin arguments be it a polite inquiry or an intimidating tone with the offender. The offender in this case or otherwise might not be a sole person.

Chennai is famous for having agencies and touts for anything and everything. Be it job placement, housekeeping, support services, government documentation from prince to pauper, Chennaiites feel free to avail the services of either registered conceriges services or casual agents. With these background, there might be rivalry attacks and these are not uncommon too. And there might not be much of legal protections due to widespread and indepth red tapisms and felonies at all levels of administration.

Hence, I would like to address the poster and as well the reader -- continue sharing the views in the media -- that would be an eye-opener for others and avoid them from succumbing to such persons.
At the sametime, in the interest of your safety and security of yourself, avoid direct confrontation with such people as far as possible.

Hi..varalu...
a sensible scribble to start with, for people to think and recollect many such incidents tat they have met with...apart from tat,i couldnt find a point were "Honesty became a worst policy"....tat lady never was honest in any sense...., so dont ever jump into a conclusion tat
"Honesty is the worst policy".....
each and every human has a "Breaking Point"...a "soft Corner" in them...Tat lady was good enough to win ur soft corner...(tats her business tactics/her dharma..)and for u its ur soft corner for tat lady tat deceived u...so,its with people to be aware abt the surroundings....
no one to be blamed....

good post....keep scribbling....

Hey Varalu :)

First time un blog parkaren. sorry came bitlate. but hey.. nice. enakkum idhe madiri oru incident nadandudu.
But somehow cannot agree that honesty is the worst policy. I don't mean that i don't lie. The diff is lying to oneself and ling to others. We can lie to others, but we shouldn't be cheating ourselves by lying to ourselves.

Somehow can't stand ppl who pretend to be what they are not :)
Anyways don't wanna make my comment appear too philosophical :)
Anyways nice post and welcome :)

NOt only this incident.. Many like this makes me feel that being dishonest is better at times !!
As honesty is not rewarded properly...and things not taken in the right sense..!! But, it happens..!! Cant help as long as corrupted brain people are present!! Nothing to blame on anyone.

Btw, I am not encouraging to be dishonest nor I mean I would b like tat..!!

Just an outburst when we come across such disloyal people in life...!! I don mean any one in particualr.

Thanks once again for all ur views....

I have a small reservation on this statement. Chennai does not allow you to be honest in entirety even if you desire to be.

Take the instance of getting a Community Certificate from Tahsildar or Driving License from RTO. Unless, you brandish a one hundred rupee Reserve Bank of India Nasik Publication out of our wallet and show it to the tout at the entrance of the government office, your file would never move for ever.

The bottomline is simple. Honesty can never be in true letters. But it must be exercised in true spirit.

Take the example of the incident in Mahabharata where Dronacharya had to be slain. He was an invincible warrior. Lord Krishna made an excellent strategy when to stick to the truth, he asked Bhimasena to kill the elephant of Madhsya Country whose name of Ashwathama. Drona's son name was also Ashwathama. Now, Yudhistra was asked to announce the slaying of Aswathama. So he shouted "Ashwathama Hatha: Kunjara:" The third letter did'nt fell in the ears of Drona since somebody else blew thier conch loudly at the moment. The first two words, induced shocked in Drona and when he dropped his bow and arrow, he was beheaded.

The bottomline of the story is simple. To satisfy the Lord and the Nature (our Inner Conscience), Honesty is required always but mundane things sometimes dictates graceful flavoring of honesty with related spices.

Thanks Sesh for dropping by and sharing ur thoughts... As u said v can know the world but I am not sure whether I will change bcos of all these..!! Certainly not...!!
My policy is "Pottruvor potrattum, thootruvoor thootrattum.." I dont mind a lot for all these things...

I do agree Deepak!! I too mean being honest to myself and my near and dear.Of course, we can't satisfy everyone for that matter. And I don't believe in getting awarded or certified from everyone. By this I agree, even I have paid money for getting my LLR.

True to Two hundred percent. Dogs will only bark and it is thier duty and you can not go near a dog and give a reply barking. Although, you can devise a strategy to escape its bite, you would end up staging an arena of shame or fame as the appropriate case may be.

Credit or disgrace -- Have it surrendered to the Lord as the birth on the world is instrumented by the Lord in His divine service.

If there is an illegal barking, the supreme owner has the best biscuit or the worst chengal (brick) or karungal (sharp granite pebble) to control the creature and let us not illicitly interfere in His deliverable and duty lest you intimidate him.
